See one of only seven fossil Archaeopteryx skeletons in the world when you visit Chicago's Field Museum, October 4-19, 1997. These rare fossils will be on view at the Museum for the first time in North America. In the last 136 years, all seven Archaeopteryx fossils were unearthed in the Solnhofen limestone quarries (pictured here) of Bavaria, Germany. Fossils found in fine-grained Solnhofen limestone are remarkably well-preserved, allowing scientists to reconstruct an entire oceanic ecosystem as it appeared 150 years ago.©Lance Grande
