FAMILY WORKSHOPS

A BUCKET OF DINOS TO GO
Sunday, October 5, 12:30 - 2:30 p.m.

Visitors can enjoy an outdoor picnic lunch of fried chicken as they overlook Chicago's beautiful lakefront. Afterwards, they can compare the bones to bird-like dinosaurs and learn why some paleontologists think that dinosaurs and chickens may be distant relatives. This event includes a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see Archaeopteryx, the small feathered dinosaur that shows the link between dinosaurs and birds. Fried chicken and lemonade will be provided. Families should bring a blanket and additional food to complete the picnic. Cost is $12 per participant ($10 per member participant). Adults and children grades 2 - 5

DIGGING INTO DINOSAURS
Sunday, October 19, 10 a.m. - noon and 1 - 3 p.m.

Learn the tools of the trade used by paleontologists and how to track different dinosaurs by the footprints they left behind. Discover the characteristics common to dinosaurs, create a flying dinosaur puppet, make dinosaur tracks and practice using tools to uncover what's hidden in a simulated fossil. View Archaeopteryx, the feathered fossil on display for the first time in North America. Cost is $10 per participant ($8 member participant). Adults and children grades K-2

DINO DISGUISES
Saturday, October 4, 10 a.m. - noon

Learn how birds have served as inspiration for masks. Visit Archaeopteryx, the world's oldest bird, and our Northwest Coast exhibits as inspiration to make your own mask. Families will work together to make and paint a clay mask to take home. Cost is $10 per participant ($8 per member participant). Adults and children grades 2 and up

A MORNING WITH CHARLES DARWIN
Sunday, October 5, 10 a.m. - noon

Join John Wagner, Ph.D., of The Field Museum Education Department, as he portrays Charles Darwin in an exploration of natural selection and evolution. Walk through several exhibits as Darwin explains the principles which formed his theories, as well as his five year voyage aboard the H.M.S. Beagle. Visit Archaeopteryx and learn how this amazing fossil substantiated Darwin's theory of evolution. Cost is $10 per participant ($8 per member participant). Adults and children grades 6 and up
