11 FACTS and CARE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

A Superior System

Nature built a unique respiratory system for birds to satisfy their rigorous demands for air, Volumes of air are needed to supply oxygen for their hot motors, and to keep their bodies from becoming overheated during periods of sustained muscular activity.

The avian respiratory system is the most intricate and efficient of any animal. Over millions of years a complex sophisticated system was modeled that could oxygenate the blood on both inspiration and expiration as needed for sustained flight over great distances, and for intense physical activities. Air constantly circulates through lungs that always stay expanded and communicate to large air sacs. The total volume of the respiratory system occupies up to 20% of the total body mass.
