Genetics and environment, what role does each play in the continuation of a species ? What role does nutrition play ?

Are we seeing the results of processed and refined diets filled with additives and other unnatural ingredients affecting not only individual dogs directly but subsequent generations as the genetic DNA is altered ? Are our pets living through the chemical plaque ?

Are our pets the mine canaries of our own environment ?
