Tango and Cash ~

Update - 5/1/05

Tango and Cash have arrived at their forever home.   Today, May 1st foster Mom Cathy Shade and I delivered Tango and Cash to their new family.    Eagerly awaiting their arrival were Ruth  and Ross of Marietta Ohio. Bless their hearts, Ruth and Ross were so eager to adopt Tango and Cash, they agreed to install a fence in order to comply with ARHCO's adoption policy.    When Tango and Cash saw their new 100 x 100' play yard with it's 6' tall wooden privacy fencing, they just went wild.   They ran this way, then that way, they jumped in the air at low flying birds, they ran across the yard so fast Ruth was worried they would jump right over the 6' tall fence.

It's been a long 3 months in foster care, as they waited for a new family to come along.   One who was willing to adopt the boys together.   THANK YOU Ruth and Ross for not only being willing to adopt 2 afghan hounds, but for your willingness to install a magnificent fence so your new boys will be safe.   We hope you all will enjoy many happy years together.                                                                                          Maureen

And to commemorate their stay at "Camp Shade, their foster Mom has written the following tribute.....

Oh, Tango and Cash, who I already miss,
I have to do something, and I guess it is this.

I’ll write some things down about you two.
It will be very little but will offer a clue.

Ruth, Ross, and the family soon will find out
Just how special you are – what we’re talking about.

In February AHRCO rescue changed your lives.
Maureen picked you up – she’s saved many lives!

You were terribly matted – the worst that we’ve seen.
And it took lots of effort to get you all clean.

We shaved you and bathed you and loved you right then.
We promise you’ll never be like that again!

Elaine and Don were also there that night.
They too knew love for you two at first sight.

Their house is where you’ve been welcome to stay
Two times since you’ve been here while we’ve been away.

Tango and Cash, you are two very special boys.
And tonight I’m packing your food and your toys.

Your stay in our home (sadly) is over now.
I know it is right, but I wonder somehow.

We love you so much, and I guess that is why
I already know that I’ll worry and cry.

Tomorrow will come and will be a great day.
It’s the right thing for YOU – I know and I pray.

Original story:

Tango and Cash were surrendered by their owner to the SPCA in Cincinnati Ohio on 1/28/05.   Volunteers at the shelter noticed them and contacted AHRCO.   We would like to express our gratitude to the Shelter management and staff for allowing us the opportunity to locate forever homes for these boys.   For that we are extremely grateful.

We've seen matted affies before, but nothing like this.   Both these boys had been well cared for at one time.  Judging by the length of the mats, both must have had full length show coats. Their coats were so thick that getting the clippers through the felt was a major challenge.    We think Tango is the blue male, slightly taller than his companion.   As we worked on Tango we stopped frequently to clip with scissors and take pictures.  Tango's legs were so severely matted he could not extend his back legs sufficiently to stand straight.  It took us 3 hours to shave Tango.    Cash, while equally horribly matted, his hair must not have been as long originally.  Both dogs were extremely well behaved during the entire ordeal, leading us to believe that were used to being groomed at one time.     Between the 2, we removed 18lbs of mats.

The photos below tell the story......

Tonight, after what must have been an exciting day for them, both boys are shaved, bathed, fed and tucked away into well padded crates at Camp Shade.   Both boys are schedule to the vet. on Monday.   Both will need neutering and are in need of dentals.  They are a little thin, and somewhat dehydrated, but overall good health.
